The Western Bay of Plenty Ostomy Society Story.
The Western Bay of Plenty Ostomy Society Inc., started on the 10th of September 1975 and with the name of ‘The Tauranga Ostomy Group” was the 9th such society formed in New Zealand. The first President was Mr. Jack Eagleston,
In 1976 the name was changed to the “Bay of Plenty Ostomy Group” with the aim of helping Ostomates throughout the Bay of Plenty to better understand what type of surgery they were about to undertake. Going through an Ostomy type of operation means that people need different information, and this also changes for individual people, and their different types of surgery. There was a need to have available members to visit patients in hospital, and to help them to know that they are not alone. All Ostomates have gone through a similar experience.
Over the years the society has grown in strength and in 2001 the name was again changed to that of the “Western Bay of Plenty Ostomy Society Inc.” and in 2006 the society was one of three such societies which organized and hosted the 2006 Federation of New Zealand Ostomy Societies Inc. and South Pacific Ostomy Society annual conference in Rotorua. In 2014 the Western Bay of Plenty Ostomy Society again organized and hosted the NZ National Ostomy Conference on behalf of the Federation of NZ Ostomy Societies Inc., again this was held in the Hotel Millennium.
There are many ways that an Ostomy can impact on your life, Cancer, Birth Defects, Bowel Disorders, Workplace and Traffic Accidents, and these can make it necessary for this type of surgery.
