2022 Christmas Breakup Dinner.
This was held at the home of Dian and Les Cheyne in Pyes Pa and had around 25 people turn up including Harry and Gaye Sutcliffe from Kawerau who had a car breakdown but borrowed a car from the motel where they were staying. It was a very low key event but with a dinner which was up to the normal standard that we have come to expect from Dian and Les with a wide range of food. Music was supplied by Brian and Sally Burgess. The weather was not wonderful but did not really detract from the event in any way. Richard presented the 2022 Coloplast ward 2nd place certificate and gave a small talk about it.

Well we had our first face to face meeting in Tauranga since lockdown commenced. This was on the 14th of July at the Raft Coffee Lounge in Chapel Street. About 15 people attended and we all had a great time. President Dian opened proceedings by welcoming everyone there and Richard spoke briefly about a new fundraiser that the Federation was looking at as well as telling them about the new Ostomy Association that is starting In Cape Town South Africa and suggested that it would be nice if we buddies with them to give them encouragement in their endeavors. There are an estimated 65000 Ostomates in South Africa and they will need all the help that they can get.
Our guest speaker was Laurene Bryce who is both a nurse as well as an Ostomate and she talked about her struggles with Ulcerative Colitis and how she had tried every diet under the sun with no success and finally had surgery. This was very well received. Those tht did not make it missed a great morning with nice food and coffee as well as great company.

To all Ostomates -Greetings to you all, I am reminded that we are living in History. Keep a journal of your activities and live one day at a time. Don't concern yourselves with things out of your control. How is the potato challenge going? You can use kumara. Make that phone call. Friends fill your Life with joy - Your soul with sunshine & Your heart with love. Be thankful for what you have. We will come out of this season in our lives and what stories we will have to share. Most Ostomates are resourceful people. Let's enjoy this lock-down time to catch up on all those thing we were going to do "sometime". Keep safe, eat well, drink plenty of water, and get plenty of sleep. All good for your well being. Cindy has the following health exercises to share with you. We know that there are at least 10 Ostomates in the area and will be holding another one in February.
We had around 15 people turn up at Kulim Park, and the day was excellent, great weather and good company and I am sure that everyone who was there had a great time and thanks to Dian and Les who handled most things in their usual efficient manner.
Western Bay of Plenty Ostomy Society Inc Report
The year has been interesting as we tried to bring in some new elements to encourage people to do normal things, e g. A speaker on Dyslexia, A music evening , Talk on an Orphanage in the Philippines as a coming event, as well as Reps from Convatec and Omnigon. Our coffee mornings appear popular and these are held in Tauranga, Rotorua and Taupo. Our A.G.M. Brought a change for the committee and we now have;
We are sending a/cs out to remind people of subs, awaiting with great expectations. The other exciting news we have Jacky Pryor & Emma Dowling who are coming on board to support the younger people with families and we are looking forward to encouraging them in this area. In October we obtained funding to hold a major seminar to mark World Ostomy Day with some excellent speakers and had registrations from as far away as Whakatane, Taupo and the Waikato. This was held in the beautiful venue ‘Woodhill” which is owned by the Legacy Trust who were one of our sponsors along with the Rotary Club of Tauranga. Richard and myself are constructing a letter to the medical fraternity that a support team is operating and we are trusting they will pass this on. At our AGM we discussed the idea of helping those who were in a much worse position than ourselves and decided to “twin” with the National Ostomy Association of the Philippines and have agreed to assist them by paying their capitation fee to the Asia & South Pacific Ostomy Association for the next 2 years. We have just started a new project which is to expand into the Eastern end of the Bay of Plenty as there are a lot of Ostomates there and no society and will be holding regular coffee mornings in Whakatane and we have some other ideas we are working on so watch this space. I continue with visiting and spend some time on the phone with enquirers I have had the occasion to speak to folk through Drs advice & Helen Collins, the hospital ward stoma nurse, when people are feeling alone prior too or after surgery. This is a very satisfying. Our new team is looking forward to working together we will share some of the work load as we are all getting older and job sharing works well for us. We are also offering subsidies to encourage folk to conference. It is my pleasure to be available for a second term as President Western Bay of Plenty Ostomy Society, President Dian Cheyne We had a small but vibrant group attending the July coffee morning at the Raft Café and had as our guest speaker Jan Bibby who runs the Literacy Clinic in Katikati and who is a teacher specializing in Assisting Dyslexic children overcome their difficulties. This was an extremely interesting talk and I am sure that none of us knew just how prevalent Dyslexia really is in the community and also that the main stream education is not capable of teaching these children and the cost of getting their problem recognized. Several of our members are still ill with winter ailments and other problems and who were unable to attend which was a pity and we wish them all a speedy recovery. Well we had another very well patronized coffee morning at the Raft in Tauranga with around 20 people attending to hear Lorraine Andrews from Omnigon speaking and showing slides on parastomal hernias and the equipment that her company had to help with this really quite debilitating problem. Once again the food was good and the company was great. We have another coffee morning coming up on the 9th of July with another very good speaker so please make an effort to come along.
The twenty or so people who turned up at the Grindz Restaurant for the May meeting had a really great time if the noise was any indication! The food was excellent and we had Priya from Convatec come from Auckland to speak to us about some of Convatec' s latest products. With a parking building just over the road which had free parking for the first hour this was a bonus.
We had a really good coffee morning at the ''RAFT' in Tauranga on Tuesday the 16th with a dozen or so members arriving for great food and coffee and company and we would like to see a few more members make the effort to join us at these events in the future, they are a low key way of meeting fellow Ostomates.
World Ostomy Day Seminar 6th October 2018
Western Bay of Plenty Ostomy Society As the Patron of the society and also the organizer of this event, which I understand was one of the few events held in NZ to celebrate WOD I would like to thank all those people who came for the seminar and In particular the executive and family who helped out on the day as without them it would not have run so smoothly, Dian, Barbara and my wife Beverly all did a considerable amount to ensure that things stayed on track. We had excellent speakers who kept the audience enthralled from start to finish. I particularly want to thank Mark Liddle from Liberty Medical who not only had products on display, but who also was one of our speakers and on top of that he handled the audio visual stuff! I want to thank Legacy Trust for the use of the building, my cousins Dorothy, Elaine and Bruce for looking after the food side of things, Mike Savage for all of his input as well as being one of our speakers. I would like to thank all of the speakers particularly as Kallia and her family had to travel from Auckland and of course Mark came from Hamilton and Barry Maughan stepped in at the last minute coming from Waihi. It is a pity that a few more of our own members did not come as they missed a fantastic day and also missed out on meeting and talking to our speakers but as is was we had people from Taupo, Waikato and Whakatane area. At this stage I am doing the final set of accounts for the event and I believe that we will have made a profit even though that was not the original intention and it is to be hoped that we will be able to make a donation to Kallia’s efforts with Team OKK next year which is designed to raise funds for an Ostomy Youth camp. Richard McNair Seminar Organizer Well our September meeting at the Tauranga Cancer Society rooms was a very interesting one with a brief talk by Richard on the upcoming October 6th World Ostomy Day seminar in Tauranga. We followed this with a very informative talk by Les Cheyne on his passion which is Archeology and Les brought along a skeleton of a Moa which he had found many years ago. This was particularly interesting talk and I am sure that everyone present went away with considerably more knowledge than they started with.
Well in spite of a small set back we had a very good meeting on Saturday with both of our Ostomy Nurses present who spoke about the recent WCET Congress in KL Malaysia. Richard also gave a brief run down on the upcoming World Ostomy Day Seminar which is being held at "Woodhill" on Saturday the 6th of October.
On Wednesday the 4th we held a coffee morning in Taupo at the Fine Fettle Café which was very well received by all who attended. We had eight ostomates and family plus Gill Bedford (who organized it) and Richard McNair. This went down so well that the intention is to hold them every month and a new venue will be announced shortly for the August Coffee Morning
The people who attended the soup and rolls luncheon at Dian and Les Cheyne's home on Tuesday had a really nice time, several different soups and lots of friendly chatter. Richard also talked about his recent trip to the WCET Congress in KL Malaysia.
This was a really great meeting and we had a fantastic talk from Mark Liddle from Hollister who showed some of the latest products and also gave a very good talk on a problem that he has suffered from all his life and that is Arthrogryposis multiplex congenital (AMC), he entitled his story "Happy Feet" and if anyone ever has the chance to listen to Mark talk on this subject it is well worthwhile.
The AGM of the Western Bay of Plenty Ostomy Society Inc was held on the 24th of March and was a very interesting and successful day in spite of a small attendance. Two new members were there and one, William, gave a very informative talk on his circumstances and a bit about his life. The society is in very good health and our finances are fine. The new Executive consists of;
President - Dian Cheyne Secretary - Barbara Mels Treasurer - Nick Mels Committee - Richard McNair Committee - TBA As our long standing Patron Dr Janet Ansell had expressed a desire to stand down from this position Richard McNair was agreed to fill this position. This was held at Kulim Park and was attended by around a dozen members who all had a great time catching up with old friends and we even had a new member come along for the first time.
Kulim Park is idea for this sort of event as it is spacious, well supplied with tables and BBQs and good toilets which are probably a necessary item for us! Thanks to Dian and Les for putting this on and I am sure that it will be an annual event for us. The Christmas lunch which was held at the Nautilus Restaurant in Tauranga was a great success with around 19 people present including three new people. I am sorry that I actually missed this one however I was ill and simply not able to make it so I am looking forward to 2018 and whatever events we put on then. Richard.
We had another very successful coffee morning on Tuesday 7th of November at the Raft in Tauranga with around 18 people attending including one new member, these are a very popular way of getting people together and anyone who was did not come I can recommend you attending the next one which will be early next year. These are a very easy way to meet new Ostomates and keep in touch with old friends.
